We are introducing you to the Pioneers who will be taking on the epic Wales360 off road challenge next July.  Following the profile of our first Pioneer Andrew Gwatkin last week, this time it’s the turn of husband and wife team Dawn Gale and Pete Haines, who make up the AQR Holidays and Coaching team.

Dawn and Pete ride most weekends, and while for ex-Royal Marine Commando Pete the physical challenge may not be as much as for some Pioneers, for Dawn it’ll mark a significant ten year anniversary as she explains.

“In 2009 had a very serious accident while riding, car basically cut across path, bike embedded in windscreen, I bounced off windscreen flew over roof of car landed in road on head and back, expectation was probably wouldn’t survive let alone walk again, have been very lucky, determined to get back on bike again and regain fitness which the Doctors believe saved me.”

Dawn’s passion for training and mountain biking remains undimmed and she’s feeling strong and motivated to take on the Wales360 challenge.

Since 2010 Dawn has been working closely with AQR a holiday and coaching company, who have been fundamental in getting confidence and skills back on the bike.

Dawn and Pete heard about the Wales360 event initially through a Google search looking for a UK based MTB stage event and then the team at One Planet Adventure at Llandegla, which features on Day Three of the adventure challenge.

The team at One Planet were able to tell them more about the event that persuaded them to take the plunge and sign-up for the challenge, saying “Why not!?”

Holidays over the past 10-15 years for the couple have often incorporated a week riding somewhere, ranging from Austria, Italy and the Iberian Peninsula in Europe, to long haul trips to Borneo and South Africa, but one of the attractions of Wales360 was not only its fully supported nature, but the lack of flights and overseas travel.

Before Dawn’s accident the pair have ridden in the Cape Epic, while more recently 2017 saw them take on the Algarve Bike Challenge and over the years Pete has completed numerous Etape du Tours on the road, while they are both familiar with several Scott MTB marathon events, while pointing out those may be just one day compared to the six days of back-to-back riding that Wales360 presents.

We wish Dawn and Pete all the best for their training and preparation and look forward to seeing them next July in Wales. Look out for more rider profiles of our Wales360 pioneers in the coming weeks.
